Transportation to and from Mexico :Notes from Brenda
I just checked out the flights to Mexico on www.expedia.ca. I found that by far the cheapest flights are from Vancouver or Calgary to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In fact the cheapest flight to Puerto Vallarta from Vancouver on Alaska Air is between $600-900 round trip. My suggestion is that folks fly into Puerto Vallarta the day before the retreat begins. For people coming from the US, flights into Manzanillo may be a better option. Those who are coming to the retreat could share a cab to your hotel for funky, old world I suggest Posada Roger ($25 US approx) in old Vallarta and for those more upscale the Hotel Rosita ($80 US approx) but it is beach front with swimming pool. Both can be booked via email. The next morning after touring Vallarta especially the old market and cathedral; you could catch a bus first or second class to Melaque. You do not need to go to the bus station its near the airport and hard to reach; the buses also leave from 2 blocks east of Posada Roger at Insurgentes and Badillo your desk clerk can be helpful here. Its the same bus that goes to Manzanillo. Expect to spend 3.5 to 5 hours on the bus. There is a food, bathroom break about half way. The best way to La Manzanilla is to ask the driver to drop you off at the cruceros (crossroad) to La Manzanilla it is about half an hour before Melaque and Barra de Navidad.
You are not going Manzanillo it is another hour and a half further south!!
From the crossroads it is a 1 mile walk into town, there are usually locals who will pick you up if you have heavy luggage, if I know you are coming I could pick you up or call a cab. Ask for the Hotel Puesta del Sol and we will meet you there. Another arrangement would be to go together with a small group say 4 or 5 and rent a cab from Puerto Vallarta to La Manzanilla I heard last year the cost for 4 being $100 so only 25 each not too bad. The bus will cost about $4.
If you decide to fly into Manzanillo let me know and I can arrange a pick up for you-the cab to La Manzanilla would probably be very reasonable. I will have my car down there and will provide transportation if I am available.
I am happy to answer questions about the transportation part, Mexicans are friendly and helpful don't be afraid to ask. Most people in this area can speak some English.
